Inspired by an interview with director John McTiernan, Movies to Memorize is a personal project where I document films that I am trying to m e m o r i z e. Each movie is broken up into sections and has a list of screen grabs of each shot and a full shot list from the scene. I then have a blog area where I ramble about my observations.

Film (or cinema if you have a curly mustash) has it's own language set apart from the written script. The language of film feels very watered down these days. I was watching a show recently on Netflix that could easily have been made with ai. The shots had no real soul or intention. I wanted to go back and saturate myself in thoughtful and well crafted filmmaking.

I had all this saved locally but some friends requested access to follow along, so I put this site together for people to peek at my notes and observations. I hope it can be a resource or insperation to you as well.

Thanks for stopping by!

John McTiernan

"What he used to make me memorize was the shots. He'd say, 'Ok, learn that movie!' — by learn that movie he meant; you sit down with a bunch of paper and pencils and write — shot for shot — the movie from memory."
